New method of understanding the service of elderly care where the centre of attention is focused on the person and their personal development

Our project has three objectives: know the person, focus on studying their biography, elaborate a personalised routine check and take into account their preferences to know their personal characteristics, needs and exectations.

Design a life plan together with the resident whereby they make decisions, following a personalised life plan prioritising their best interests, personalised activities and nutrition self management.

Get the family involved as well as their surroundings to facilitate their integration in the centre and involve those close to the residents on a day-to-day basis. Essentially, we want to make sure the resident “is happy and can live their life to the fullest as if they were at home, turning the residence into a familiar surrounding”. To focus our approach on the well-being and unique identity of each resident, we put in a lot of time and dedication into being very organised. This method has shown optimal results in our centre.

Origin and methodology

The project is inspired by the guide “Elderly care focused on the person” by Teresa Martínez Rodríguez, who also inspired other models for residencies and homes for the elderly in other communities such as Euskadi and which are developed with an added value in their methodology, evident through the success of these residencies, day centres and rural services.

Moreover, Teresa’s methodology has been followed with the backing of an experienced consultant who works on improving results to “turn them into a source of reference”.

In practice, the organisation of the project is firmly based on changes, such as improving and managing resources; in the architectural model; in the distribution and design of spaces; in how we learn and understand people’s life paths in order to make the best decisions; with custom designed activity plans; taking actions that best favour the interests of the resident, their family and their environment with professionals who are at their disposal to adapt to them as a person and who are sensitive to their needs. Following this programme, 30 services have been managed and over 2.700 people in Catalonia have been assisted.
